Jewelcraft has changed a lot over the years. It is much easier to skill up now, but it is still a bit on the pricey side.
To get started, do one of the freebie quests in either Crescent Reach or Absymal Sea. The Crescent Reach one is easier as always. There is also an alternate path in Absymal Sea where you can learn to refine the Gates of Discord Ingredients for Raw Shimmering Nihilite and Raw Indigio Nihilite.
After you've gotten your skill to 54, you're going to want to pay a visit to Event Coordinator Baublie Diggs in West Freeport to get her Beginner Jewel Craft task. The lower your skill level when you request one of her tasks, the easier they are to complete!
From this point, the path to 300 has gotten much easier. Check out the Trade Skill Guides in the EQ Traders Forums. They'll give you some great ideas on how to move forward in Jewelcraft.
