Learn Spell Research 2.0

Spell research is another one of the trade skills that changed substantially from its original conception. With the Depths of Darkhollow expansion all the way back in 2005, Spell research stopped using the words and runes that dropped from mobs and began paradigm involving papers, inks, thickeners, quills and additives to create spells, songs and tomes. You can find a complete write up of the "new" spell research system that will walk you through all the basics.

It is also now available to ALL CLASSES, not just Int casters!

New Spell research system aside, the best place to start for everyone is with the freebie quest in Crescent Reach. Spell research does not have an earlier equivalent in Abysmal Sea. This will raise your skill to 54.

After you've gotten you skill up to 54, immediately pay a visit to Event Coordinator Baublie Diggs in West Freeport and get the Beginner Spell Research Trophy Task. This is the easiest to complete and your trophy can evolve with you.

Spell research has to be one of the hardest skills to level because of the required dropped ingredients. I'd suggest setting up a buyer and offering a few plat for the "papers" that you need to raise your skill to help you acquire some ingredients while you're also doing your own farming. You can also use a buyer to obtain Crystallized Sulfur and Saltpeter if you're going to try to minimum your costs and do ALL the subcombines to make the solutions yourself. The solutions do get pretty pricey as your skill increases even if you make them all yourself.

Beyond that, there are trade skill guides in the EQ Traders Forums where other users have posted suggestions for skill up paths. With this trade skill though, you're probably going to need to go the Quick Trivial List and just find recipes that correspond to the ingredients you've been able to obtain versus your targeted trivial.

One additional thing to keep in mind is that for Priests and Hybrid, you have to spend a fair number of Alternate Advancement points to take your skill over 200.
