Parts for Bellfast

This quest is given in the form of a task by the mechanical gnome Bellfast at -740, 250 in Corathus Creep. (From the Nektulos Forest zone follow the path up then head southwest through the village, past a dead end path on the left, then down the path straight ahead into another village area.) You must complete this task (and then "More Parts for Bellfast") in order to get any of his other tasks.

This task will be different for research classes (enchanters, magicians, necromancers, and wizards) than for non-research classes.

Non-Researcher Classes

You say, 'Hail, Bellfast?'

Bellfast says 'Hello there. It's good to see faces from the aboveworld. Most of the time all I get to see are metallic faces, not that I mind that much. The benefit of mechanical bodies is that we don't really age. Why, I reckon that I'm gettin' near to three hundred years now. Of course, there are drawbacks too. Parts wear out. When they all wear out, then I guess we've reached old age. I'm always looking for parts, so if you happen to come across any parts that one of them nasty Creep Reapers might not need any longer, why I'd be grateful if you could bring them to me. If I can use them I'll gladly pay you for them. I'm not wealthy, but I'll pay a fair price if I can. I am also looking for some [scraps of paper] if you can find them.'

You say, 'What scraps of paper?'

If you don't have any Mechanoinstruction Scraps in your inventory:

Bellfast says 'Well, there are these pages that I need. . . I'm not sure how to describe them, but I'll know one when I see it! If you find one, come back and tell me that you have one of the [scraps of paper] and then we can talk.'

When you do have Mechanoinstruction Scraps:

Bellfast says 'Oh! I see you have part of a mechanoinstruction! I need a few of those to make myself work better. If you can get me some of the complete [mechanoinstructions] I will give you a manual that will tell you how to make them. If you help me with this, I may have more you can [help me with].'

You say, 'What mechanoinstructions?'

Bellfast says 'A Mechanoinstruction is a small piece of parchment with holes in it in a certain pattern. These holes tell the machinery what it should do. We happen to have a few of them inside of us to help the various parts of us work.'

You say, 'What can I help you with?'

You have been assigned the task 'Parts for Bellfast'.

Bellfast says 'Go see Merchant Model CGXIV near the bankers and ask him about my [pinion gears] and he will give you a bundle that I need, and bring them back to me.'

You say, "What pinion gears for Bellfast?"

Note: You must say "What pinion gears for Bellfast?" and not just "What pinion gears?" Also, you may need to be very close to the Merchant Model CGXIV in order to get a response. Very tall races may need to be practically on top of him.

As with all tasks involving collection of different items, you will probably get multiples of some items before you get one of each of them. You will know when you've looted one you didn't have yet because your task will update.

When the final step is completed you will automatically be assigned the follow-up task, More Parts for Belfast.

There are some reports that the first step may not work if you already have a Spell Research Kit in your possession when you go to Merchant Model CGXIV. Also, taller races may need to get quite close to him for the task to update when you buy the kit from him.

The various activities Bellfast has you doing here are so you can earn the five pages of Scrindite's Mechanoinstruction Manual, which you then make in the final step. You earn the first page when you buy your Spell Research Kit and then return to speak with Bellfast. You get the second, third, and fourth pages when you hand the Tattered Mechanoinstructions to Bellfast. You get the fifth page when you turn in the Clockwork Pinion Gears and Clockwork Gears. Then you combine all five pages to complete the task.

To make the Tattered Mechanoinstructions you need to get ten different items called Mechanoinstruction Scraps. You don't have to actually loot them; you could also get them from other people or vendors. You may wish to acquire all ten before combining any of them, however, to make sure you do have the ten different pages. They are not lore, so you will not be prevented from acquiring more than one of the same scrap, but at least you can tell whether they are different by whether they stack. The way to tell which page is which is to identify it. Each page identifies as a set of letters and dots (representing blank spaces), which when put together spell the name of that page. So when you fit together the letters and spaces in the pages that combine together, you get a word. The words and the pages that combine to make them are:

"Mechanotablet":

M . . h . n o t a . l . t
. e . . . . . . . . . e .
. . c . a . . . . b . . .

"configuration":

c o . . . g . . . . . . n
. . n . . . . . a . . . .
. . . f i . . . . . i o .
. . . . . . u r . t . . .

"advisory book":

a . v . s . . . . . . o .
. d . i . o r . . b . . k
. . . . . . . y . o . .

"Mechanotablet", "configuration" and "advisory book" are not the names of the items you will make by combining the right scraps. They will be called Tattered Mechanoinstructions, but will then identify as "A repaired piece of paper with the words Mechanotablet/configuration/advisory book".

The Clockwork Pinion Gears and Clockwork Gears may be much more common off of the clockworks in the village area, although you will take hits to the Expedition 328 faction. They do not appear to be very big hits, however.
