Practice runes are a skill-up route given to researchers from 0-182 skill. As the various runes and words and pages are difficult to farm consistently, this provides a much more consistent path towards journeyman research.

Each skill-up combine consists of two incomplete runes, Azia and Beza, which produce a complete rune. The two incomplete runes are no-fail combines of various farmed ingredients. The incomplete runes are made in the Concordance Of Research, which is quested for, and the complete runes are combined in your class-unique spell-research container:

Enchanter – Phantasmal Tome or Tome Of Endless Enchantments
Magician – Arch Magus Grimoire or Elemental Grimoire
Necromancer – Book Of Dark Bindings or Warlock's Book Of Binding
Wizard - Lexicon or Sorcerer's Lexicon

It doesn’t matter which of your class's books you use; the difference between them is that the ‘higher’ ones are used for high level spells that cannot be done in the lower versions.

So, first of all, you require your concordance of research. This quest is very simple. Just obtain a Greater Lightstone from any willowisp on Norrath. Depending on your race’s alignment, take it to the appropriate Gypsy:

Good Races: Barbarian, Dwarf, Erudite, Froglok, Halfling, High Elf, Wood Elf - Mrysila, at the gypsy camp in North Karana, -672, 162

Evil Races: Dark Elf, Iksar, Ogre, Paineelite, Troll - Smith Tv’ysa, at the camp in South Ro, +100, +500

Neutral Races (Gnome, Half-Elf, Human, Vah Shir) can use either one, unless their actions have affected the factions in some way.

You can also bring Lightstone to them, and get yourself Runes And Research Volume I and Runes And Research Volume Ii, which detail the practice rune recipes. It’s a handy in-game reference, but not at all necessary. Next, you buy your class-specific container-book of choice and Quill (should be on the same merchant). Stock up on Piece Of Parchment too; you will need two for every complete rune (one in each incomplete).

Now you can start on the runes. Each incomplete rune needs one parchment and one quill. The only components in the complete runes are the two incompletes. 182 is the highest level research you can go with practice runes. The rest must be done out there. Refer to the research section of the site for more guidance.
